Winter Lights Project
October/November

We installed low-wattage LED string lights on the facades of buildings in our three town centers, adding a warm glow on these cold winter nights. The lights came on just before Thanksgiving, and will continue to glow from 4:30pm-9pm until March. Many thanks to those volunteers who came out to help us climb ladders, untangle strings of lights, set timers, and make this warm glow happen. Thanks also to The Cornwall Foundation and the Economic Development Commission for their generous financial support.

Baird responded to questions moderated by Richard Schlesinger, the evening's host. Following their discussion, the three candidates for Selectman, Rocco Botto, John Brown and Jen Markow, each gave their thoughts on their qualifications. The Cornwall Bears
A Cornwall Community Art Project
Summer 2022

33 plywood cutouts of papa bears, mama bears and bear cubs - all painted & decorated by Cornwallians - were installed throughout the centers of Cornwall Village, Cornwall Bridge and West Cornwall. They brought smiles to all who saw them. Pictures of all the bears are below.

The bears voted ‘best bears’ - and who won prizes for their creators – were:

Mama Bear:  ‘The Starry Sow’ by Lynn Carano

Papa Bear: ‘Mykola’ (“Victory to the People” in Ukrainian) by Denise Bate

Cubs: ‘Clarence’ by Steve Foote and ‘Cornwall Sunset Bear’ by the Cornwall Consolidated After School Kids.

The raffle ticket fundraiser of the bears raised over $1600 for the Cornwall Food and Fuel Fund.

Our thanks to all the wonderful bear artists, our supportive community who bought nearly 2500 raffle tickets, and the generous funding for this project from The Cornwall Foundation and National Iron Bank.

Impact of Invasive Insects in Connecticut Forests
Saturday, March 5th, 4pm - Online Zoom Seminar

Dr. Rob Clark led an online seminar about invasives like woolly adelgid, gypsy moth, emerald ash borer, spotted lanternfly, and tree diseases like beech blister and beech leaf disease. A lively Q&A followed his presentation. Over 60 people attended!

Insects are profoundly important for the health of forest ecosystems, but ecosystems can go awry when humans unintentionally introduce invasive species. What causes invasive species to be so "bad"? What do we know about invasives found in Connecticut forests? Join Rob Clark for a zoom seminar on March 5th at 4pm. This online seminar will include Q&A about invasives like woolly adelgid, gypsy moth, emerald ash borer, spotted lanternfly, and tree diseases like beech blister and beech leaf disease. Bring all your questions!

This event is co-sponsored by the Cornwall Conservation Trust, the Cornwall Conservation Commission, the Cornwall Association, and the Cornwall Library.

A "tree health hike" at a Cornwall Conservation Trust property is planned, date TBD.

THE CORNWALL BARNYARD ANIMALS ARE IN TOWN!

In the Spring of 2021 forty-five plywood cutouts of cows, pigs, and roosters were painted and/or decorated by Cornwallians of all ages – a town-wide art project. Through the summer the Cornwall Barnyard Animals were displayed throughout town for everyone to enjoy. Besides lots of admiration from all who saw them, many compliments and smiles abounded.

In September the animals below went up for auction raising $3,375 for the Cornwall Women’s Society Scholarship Fund. These animals now have new homes and if you’re lucky you may see one or more in someone’s yard…

Our thanks to the many Cornwallians who helped make this fun project a success, and to the three generous underwriters of this project, The Cornwall Foundation, The National Iron Bank, and Cornwall’s Economic Development Commission

This project was generously supported by The Cornwall Foundation, Cornwall's Economic Development Commission, and The National Iron Bank.

Cornwall Trivia Night

The team trivia game started at 6:30PM (with doors open at 5:30PM for those wishing to have a Bring-Your-Own-Food & Drink dinner).  Lots of fun and laughs were had as teams showed off their grasp of tidbits of information and facts....did you know who was the longest reigning monarch in modern European History (Louis XIV) or what two U.S. States share the longest border (Texas and Oklahoma)? 50 people in 8 teams competed and while a few gasps of 'we should’ve known that' were heard, more often roars of success and applause accompanied ‘we knew that!’. $5 per person entry fee raised $250 for The Cornwall Library.

Farewell, participants and spectators of the 2018 West Cornwall Covered Bridge Floor Boards Project.

Thank you to all who fashioned pieces for our exhibit and thank you to those who took home boards for re-build and repair projects or who took home boards just to give them a new home.  And thank you all who came Saturday to the lovely Trinity Retreat Center to celebrate the work and to welcome new neighbors.

(Pictured above, Laurent Serriere’s Yarn and Knitting Needles - - bluestone and bridge boards; see www.laurentidestoneworks. com for more information on his work)

  • In particular, we wish to thank the exhibitors from yesterday’s project:Richard Griggs (www.rgthingmaker.com), whose “Weathervane” piece found  buyers and new home. (And we, of course, thank him very much for having come up with the entire idea of saving and re-purposing the bridge boards!)
  • Tim Prentice gifted us his creation of a wagon, made of barbed wire, going over an old bridge board and it was successfully auctioned off at the event.  You can learn more about Tim’s work at www.timprentice.com.
  • Joseph Brien (www.lostartworkshops.com) presented an elegantly wrought gavel somehow extracted from the old boards.
  • Jeremie Tilson’s  “Light/sconce,” which caught our attention and would have been sold, if not for the fact that it was not for sale.  Maybe, some day, we will let you know.
  • Stephen Sperduto, proprietor of Housatonic Fine Art and Framing, fashioned a set of frames from the bridge boards, and used the frames to present photographs from Cornwall’s own Lazlo Gyorsok (see his work at www.pictures-by-lazlo.com) and to present a poem about childhood covered bridge memories penned by Caroline Kosciusko. Frames and/or art works will be available at Steve’s gallery at 18 Kent Road South, Cornwall Bridge (sssfineart@hotmail.com).
  • Photos of work in progress were received from Jim Hurlburt.  Jim is using the bridge boards as handles for his home made chef knives.  To learn more or to place an order, visit www.jhforgehome.com.
  • And still available, much admired, Sergei Fedorjaczenko’s bridge board table (pictured below). See www.sergeidesign.com for more of his work and contact information.

  • And the aforementioned Laurent Serriere of Laurentide Stoneworks, Inc, for his exhibit and forklift prowess in bringing his still-in-progress sculpture to us.

Of course, we could not see, but should equally celebrate the boards that are now part of our collective homes - - barn rebuilds, repaired bridges over streams and creeks, lawn decorations, sentimental displays….

And some, well, I just don’t know, but have to assume that after years of being in one place, the bridge boards decided to pick up and see the world.  So they threw an old rucksack over their backs, put on pair of High Top sneakers and took off, hitching a ride where they could, hiking where they must, hopping a freight train here, or riding the Greyhound Bus there, off to find America on its highways and byways, great and small, from coast to coast and north to south.

I know this tale strains credulity - - I mean, really, why leave for somewhere else, when they are already here in Cornwall.  But I am sure they will be back one day, maybe at next year’s Newcomers’ Tea, newly fashioned into a work of art or just resting their tired feet. And, oh what stories they will have to tell!

If you should have in your possession one of our wayward boards and wish to exhibit it at a future Cornwall event, please get in touch with us at the Cornwall Association. Or if you would like to send a picture of how your bridge boards are being used, we would be pleased to display the pictures on our website.

It has been my great pleasure to work with you all, and I thank you for your many kindnesses,

Peter Demy

UPDATE! THE BRIDGE IS OPEN AND THE FLOOR BOARDS ARE GONE!

Thank you for your interest and support!

Bridge Floor Boards Offering

Don’t miss your chance to own a piece of the West Cornwall Covered Bridge!

The Cornwall Association is pleased to offer you a chance to purchase the 2” thick oak floorboards that will be removed during the renovation of the Bridge.

Floorboards will also be offered free of charge to artists and craftspeople who agree to make an item (a bench? a picture frame? a bat box for the nesting bridge bats? . . .) that they will display and offer for sale at the Cornwall Association’s Annual Newcomers' Tea on October 20, 2018.

E-mail Peter Demy at pdstulldemy@gmail.com for more information or to reserve boards.

**Save the date for our annual Newcomers' Tea, Saturday, October 20, 2018 at the Trinity Retreat Center.

Update!!

Thank you all for your interest in the West Cornwall/Sharon covered bridge floor boards project. Work is progressing. Here are some pictures and a short update for you that covers all basic information.

The Bridge is closed.

The floor boards are out - - well some of them and more are following each day.

Obtaining Boards:

The extracted boards are being stored on Lower River Road in West Cornwall for the next two weeks.  (After that, we will assess our progress and decide where to store the remaining boards.) For now, for picking up your boards, go past the Hughes Memorial Library to the first river access road (just after the Eagle Nest sculpture) and help yourself. Boards may be picked up anytime during the daylight hours, Monday-Sunday. The supervisor is Jason Dexter and he is well aware of this project and has been quite helpful.  If you have any problems, ask for him and, of course, get in touch with me at my e-mail or home phone (pdstulldemy@gmail.com/860- 671-6005).

Note: As I mentioned, the boards are 13 feet long by ten inches wide by two inches thick. However, the contractor is finding that they must cut some of the boards during the extraction process, so the length will vary from board to board. This actually makes them a bit easier to transport.

As you pick up boards, please send me an e-mail so I can update our log and keep track of inventory.

Paying for the Boards:

We are on the honor system here. Boards are free to anyone planning to use them in an artistic or craft project.  We ask only that you plan to exhibit your work (for sale, if you so desire) at the annual Cornwall Newcomers’ Tea, to be held on 20 October 2018 at the Trinity Retreat Center on Lower River Road, West Cornwall (details on the Tea will appear in the October issue of the Cornwall Chronicle and on the Cornwall Association website).  Boards will also be made available to anyone planning to re-purpose them for home use projects, for example garden beds, benches, bridges, tunnels, skyscrapers...

For all other uses, we are requesting a donation of $20 per board (or $10 per half board) to the Cornwall Association. Click on “Donate.”  It will provide you with options (PayPal or check) and addresses.

Exhibiting Your Art Work

If you wish to exhibit actual pieces, either for show or sale, or photos, at the Newcomers’ Tea, please contact Brenda Singer of the Cornwall Association at brenda.l.singer@gmail.com.

The Cornwall Association proudly sponsored the town flag design contest in celebration of Cornwall's 275th birthday.
The winning flag now flies on the Cornwall Town Green.

The winner...

1st Place – Michael Heming

Description: “The cow symbolizes Cornwall’s history as a farming community and home to the Cream Hill Agricultural School (1845-1869), one of the earliest agricultural schools in the US and is still relevant today with several newly established dairy and beef farms.
The covered bridge, one of the most famous in New England (1864) symbolizes Cornwall’s connection to the traditional architecture of the 19th century, both in its material- wood and its color- barn red. It also represents innovation with its roof for protection from the weather and its single center stonework pier. On the flag the seven white windows of the bridge represent the seven principal localities of Cornwall: Cornwall Bridge, Cornwall, East Cornwall, West Cornwall, North Cornwall, Cream Hill and Cornwall Hollow.
The dark blue color represents the three publicly accessible bodies of water- Mohawk Pond, Cream Hill Lake and the Housatonic River.
The white on the cows brow represents the skiing trails on Mohawk Mountain.

  •   Michael Heming
  • About the winner - Michael Heming

Michael's grandfather, the artist Armin Landeck, came to East Cornwall in 1930 and lived there throughout the depression until his passing in 1984. His mother grew up there and he visited as a child growing up in Westchester, NY. In 2000 he and his wife, Kristin took over the original house which was built in 1800 and have divided their time between their home in Larchmont, NY and Cornwall ever since. Michael is an architect and Kristin is an art dealer.
